Hello from Holly…
Is Your Heart Healthy?
If your doctor were to tell you that they have found a new way to prevent heart disease would you be interested?? Of course you would be, so would I!
Well there is a way to help prevent it … and it’s not an expensive new medication and it isn’t going to take a lot of your time … have you guessed what it is?
You guessed it, exercise! That’s all. Just 30 minutes a day. We’ve all heard it before. But I bet your ears perked up when you read there might be a new way to prevent heart disease right? But yet when our doctor says, “exercise,” we slump back in our chairs and dismiss it.
We all have 24 hours every day; that’s 1,440 minutes. What is with us that we can’t find 30 minutes a day to take care of our heart? We spend far more than 30 minutes a day eating. We probably watch TV for at least 30 minutes a day. Why can’t we take 30 for exercise?
Yes, I know it’s winter, the streets are icy, it’s cold out, it’s not safe to walk in our neighborhoods, a membership at the gym costs too much. So many excuses. And of course, the best excuse of all: “I don’t have time.” Come on, let’s get real – 30 minutes? People seem to find 30 minutes after they have a heart attack. Don’t wait for a heart attack before you find your 30 minutes!
Just as our bodies need food and sleep for maintenance, our hearts need exercise. Maybe hearts should come with an instruction manual – “need 30 minutes maintenance a day.” It’s not a lot to ask for an organ that makes everything else happen for us. February is Heart Month, and at SeniorsPlus, we’re making it the “30 Minute Exercise Challenge” month. I challenge you. Take the pledge. Can you do it? Your heart will thank you.
